A Bridesmaids Sequel Without Kristen Wiig?

It was heralded as ‘The Funniest Comedy of The Year’ by numerous sources in 2011, and did surprisingly well at the Box Office, so it should come as no surprise that Universal are looking to cash in and release a Bridesmaids sequel as soon as they can; something which co-writers and stars Annie Mumolo and Kristen Wiig aren’t exactly thrilled about.

Wiig recently told The Hollywood Reporter that her and Annie “aren’t planning a sequel” and that they are “writing something else”, because they wouldn’t be happy to simply churn out another scene-for-scene version of the same movie (as one big comedy property did last year), and want their next project to be both funny and original.

Universal have also said that “if we do a sequel we want to get it right”, and that they are “talking to filmmakers now about concepts”, but producer Judd Apatow seems positive it will go ahead as soon as there is “an idea as good or better than the first one”; and with all the spin-off potential created by Melissa McCarthy’s Megan, that might not be too far away.
