Antoine Fuqua to Direct Eminem’s Boxing Movie, Southpaw?

Despite receiving very favourable reviews for starring in his semi-biopic movie 8 Mile, rapper Eminem hasn’t been seen on the big screen since 8 Mile was released back in 2002, but will soon step in front of the camera to star in the upcoming boxing movie Southpaw; which may have just found a director, in Antoine Fuqua.

Best known for directing the gritty police drama Training Day, Fuqua has now entered talks to direct the drama; about a left-handed welterweight fighter who boxes his way to glory despite suffering a personal tragedy; and should sign on to direct the movie shortly after wrapping up the biopic of Yang Guifei he is currently shooting in China.

Having been written by former The Shield writer, turned Sons of Anarchy creator, writer, and showrunner, Kurt Sutter, it’s likely that Southpaw will provide a gritty and engrossing drama after it enters production this fall (provided a deal is made before then), and is released either mid/late next year, or sometime in 2013; though it will have a long way to go if it’s to effectively compete against The Fighter.
