It was not only the biggest hit of 2009, but remains the highest grossing movie of all time, so it was no surprise that both 20th Century Fox and director James Cameron were keen to jump into producing a sequel to Avatar, but it now appears as if fans won’t be seeing the return of Jake and Neytiri as soon as expected; as the release of Avatar 2 has now been delayed for a couple of years.
Originally planned for release in December 2014 (with Avatar 3 following in December 2015), Avatar’s sequel is now apparently “four years away”, according to producer Jon Landau; who says that makes it due in “2016”, or that “Christmas 2015 would also be an option”, with Avatar 3 still set for release “a year later.”
The reason for the delay is likely the added technology being pumped into the film; as while the original movie was at the forefront of 3D and motion capture technology (and really ushered in a boom in both markets), Avatar 2 is set to “showcase advanced technology” which also includes the use of “a higher framerate.”
