It’s been seven years since the release of Avatar, the undeniably groundbreaking cinematic spectacle which not only became the highest grossing movie ever released, but reshaped the structure of cinema releases ever since (the 3D influx simply wouldn’t have happened without it), but after so long, and so many delays for James Cameron’s planned follow-up, do people really care?

Well, Cameron certainly hopes so – as he’s just announced four upcoming sequels to his epic space-saga, while making a surprise appearance at CinemaCon.

Three sequels were already in the works, but apparently the story ideas have grown so big he’s had to add an extra film into the timeline. Each of the four are set to be standalone movies, but all connect to form one epic saga, and James has said he’s “been working with the top four screenwriters and designers in the world to design the world of Avatar going forward. The environments, new cultures, whatever it takes to life.”

Those writing partners include Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno, and although release dates aren’t set in stone (the past few years should be an indication of that), Avatar 2 is pencilled in for 2018, with 3, 4, and 5 following in 2020, 2022, and 2023 respectively, as all films will be shot concurrently.
