The internet seems to be full of rumours and conjecture as we await the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This is, of course, to be expected, but it looks like there is something to announce that may have a bit (or a lot) of truth behind it: Benicio del Toro will be a villain in Star Wars VIII.

Speaking with Spanish radio station Rac 1, del Toro “confirmed” the news, saying he’s set to play the main villain role in the film which will see a May, 2017 release, although there is no official confirmation of this. His exact quote was: “Star Wars is coming up, we will see how that turns out. I think we start shooting in March… The thing is, they don’t let me talk too much about it. I’m like the villain. But we’ll see.”

A quote like that is very hard to take anything out of, but I’m sure most people would agree that del Toro has enough maniacal suave to play just about anybody in a fantastical universe such as Star Wars‘. Star Wars VIII will be written and directed by Rian Johnson (Looper), with Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis), as Poe Dameron, being the only confirmed star so far.
