Clash of the Titans 2 Gets Director

Despite all the negatives reviews, and the general ill feelings of most movie-goers that saw this year’s remake of the 1981 classic, Clash of the Titans, the movie; which has become the go-to example of a terrible post-production 3D conversion; was still a worldwide hit for Warner Bros. and Legendary (grossing over $491 million); which is precisely why the studios greenlit a sequel a couple of months back.

Since then, several writers have been hired, and the studios have declared that they plan to shoot Clash of the Titans 2 in 3D, rather than going down the road of the disastrous post-production conversion as they did with the first film, and begun actively pursing a director.

The director that was chosen to replace Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk); Jonathan Liebesman (The Killing Room); managed to acquire the sought-after contract (which has actually been the subject of some contention; with negotiations focussing on money, and overcoming the negative perception of the first installment, stretching out over the summer) largely as a result of strong footage from him upcoming feature Battle: Los Angeles; a Black Hawk Down style alien invasion picture that’s due out next year.

Sam Worthington (Avatar) and Gemma Arterton (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time) are expected to reprise their roles as the Ancient Greek heroes Perseus (the Demi-God son of Zeus) and Io (a woman who doesn’t age) respectively, for the sequel that’s being written by Dan Mazeau (Johnny Quest) and David Leslie Johnson (Red Riding Hood), and will once again find Perseus squaring off against Gods from the heavens, and the underworld.

It was reported some time back that the studios had set an official start date for the picture (which is still currently penned in for February 2011), although there has been no official release date confirmed as of yet; but judging by the start date, and production time of the first, it’s most likely to be making it’s theatrical debut sometime in early 2012.
