Dawn Of The Apes Is UK’s Top Summer Movie 2014

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes posterAfter news recently broke of Guardians of the Galaxy becoming the number one summer movie in the US, topping even Marvel’s other superhero effort (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) by a healthy margin, and becoming the top grossing film of the year in the US, the same doesn’t hold true for UK Box Office results; which recently confirmed Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes was the top film of summer 2014 in Great Britain.

Having taken an impressive £31.98 million at the Box Office, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes earned over 50% money than it’s predecessor Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes (which grossed £20.77 million back in 2011), but it wasn’t a done deal, as the race for the top-spot this year was extremely close, and Caesar and friends narrowly managed to beat off the boys from The Inbetweeners 2 in order to secure Dawn’s place as champion.

The Inbetweeners 2 grossed a total of £31 million this summer, falling the better part of £1 million behind Dawn Of The Apes (remember both films are still in cinemas now, so final figures could change), yet even though it was also short of the heights reached by the first Inbetweeners Movie (which took £45.03 million, also in 2011), a £31 million haul is still hugely impressive for a British sit-com spin-off film.

Below you can see tables detailing the top ten summer movies of 2014 in both the US and UK, clearly highlighting the differences between the two audiences; with Guardians of the Galaxy topping the summer charts in the States, but only scraping 4th place in Britain, and Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes topping British charts, but landing on 5th place Stateside; but what the tables don’t show, is how, unfortunately, takings were massively down in both locales compared to the same period last year; with the UK Box Office dropping a substantial 11%, and the US falling even further, with grosses 15% below the 2013 level.
