Dexter Drastically Departing from Established Formula

While the recently released trailer for the fifth season of Showtimes consistently brilliant, multiple award winning show, Dexter may have fans gagging to see the latest installment; as it looks every bit as tense, shocking, and brutally gripping, as previous seasons, and then some; recent news from the show’s producers confirm that the series’ formula will be drastically changing in the future.

In previous seasons the show’s hero, Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall, Gamer); the loveable Miami P.D. blood spatter analyst who moonlights as a serial killer, but is still the good guy as he only ever kills those who deserve it (pedophiles, drug dealers, other serial killers); has only had to deal with one major enemy; in the first it was the ice-truck killer, then police surveillance and a twisted girlfriend, followed by a district attorney/wannabe serial killer (played by Jimmy Smitz, L.A. Law), and finally a sadistic murderer known as the trinity killer (John, Lithgow, 3rd Rock from the Sun); but now he will be contending with more, as the show will no longer be having a single guest ‘bad guy’ in a season, but favours having Dexter interact with several guest stars.

Fans are undecided as to whether or not the decision is a good thing, as having one main bad guy a series allows for audiences to get fully drawn into a story that becomes more gripping as time goes on; because the characters become more developed, and viewers become more invested in their particular world and storyline; but introducing more guest stars has the potential to create many more interesting characters, and amp up the already fast-paced action and tension in Dexter’s world.

But at this juncture the effects of the change remain to be proven wise or foolish; unlike the very wise decision of show officials who confirmed that the major character who was discovered dead in the closing seconds of the season four finale will not be returning, as they are “more than dead” and facilitating a return “would fundamentally harm the DNA of the show.”

Fans will be able to make their decision about the new format in just four weeks; when Dexter will return to the small screen, and begin a process of atonement for the events of the previous season, and those stemming back further; when season 5 premieres on Sunday September 26th.
