Diane Lane is Superman’s Mum

Continuing the slow and consistent feed of casting confirmations and rumours (which have recently seen Prince of Thieves actor Kevin Costner linked to the role of Superman’s father, and Lord of the Rings star Viggo Mortensen linked to the role of his mortal enemy General Zod), Warner Bros. have recently announced that Diane Lane has been cast in important role of the superheroes adoptive mother.

Director Zack Snyder said that choosing the right woman to play Martha Kent (the woman who takes in the young alien baby, and raises him as her own child) was a “very important piece of casting”; as Martha’s “values helped shape the man we know as Superman”; and that he is “thrilled to have Diane in the role, because she can coney the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.

Fans also seem to approve, as not only does this further confirm the fact that the upcoming remake; which is being produced by Inception’s Christopher Nolan, and written by Blade’s David S. Goyer; will be a much younger movie on the whole, but now has a fairly pivotal role being portrayed by not only an Oscar nominated actress (earned for her roles in 2002’s Unfaithful), but an actress that clearly has undeniable sex appeal (as she’s already been dubbed by more than one publication as Superman’s MILF).

Filling the part of Lane’s son; the alien turned mild-manner reported, and flying, cape-wearing, crusader; Superman, is Henry Cavill (The Tudors) and whilst the roles of Jonathan Kent, and General Zod (if he will actually appear) are still yet to be finalized (as Costner and Mortensen remain simply persons of interest at this time), there’s still time for plenty more announcements before shooting begins in August, and the movie hits its official release date in December 2012.
