Well known as one of the most beloved cartoons of all time; containing some of the most loved characters, the most quotable catchphrases, and the most ingenious use of dinosaurs ever seen; The Flintstones will soon be heading back to the small screen, courtesy of a rebooted series which has just been commissioned by Fox.
Unlike like the two live-action movie versions of the series, the upcoming reboot will be another animated venture, and is due to be produced by the famed cartoon expert Seth MacFarlane; the creator of Family Guy, American Dad, and The Cleveland Show; who says the first cartoon he ever drew was of Fred Flintstone.
Rightsholders to The Flintstones were understandably uneasy at the thought of MacFarlane holding the reigns to the reboot; given his predisposition for rather raunchy comedy; but have now resolved the qualms, and like Fox (who reportedly “can’t wait to introduce them [The Flintstones] to a whole new generation”) are happy for the reboot to go ahead.
Seth has alone attempted to dissuade fears that he will be changing the show completely, by insisting that Fred, Wilma, Barney and Betty, and the rest of the characters, will still look the same, but will have new technology to play with; asking people “what is the animal version of the iPad?”
Joining a network that already boasts such cartoon hits as The Simpsons, and Family Guy, The Flintstones is due to enter production this coming fall, before making a premiere on the Fox network in 2013; as Seth MacFarlane has stated, in his traditional comic fashion, he believes “America is finally ready for an animated sitcom about a fat stupid guy with a wife who’s too good for him.”
