The eighth instalment in the surprisingly durable action franchise The Fast and the Furious will be partly shot in the small, West Iceland port town of Akranes, which was confirmed by the town’s mayor Regina Ásvaldsdóttir.

During a þorrablót gathering (a winter festival), the mayor said, “Surely, this is an extensive project and will affect retail and service in town.” Believe it or not, Akranes has been the filming location for another significant piece of entertainment: the acclaimed science-fiction television show Sense8, which is executively-produced and written by the Wachowskis and J. Michael Straczynski. Shooting of Fast 8 will take place by the harbour of the town and in the colloquially named Cement Fields. According to Icelandic magazine Visir, the crew is getting ready to create the largest explosion ever seen in Iceland.

Fast 8 will be directed by Straight Outta Comptons F. Gary Gray and hit theatres on April 14, 2017.
