First Image of Sherlock Holmes 2

Filming recently began on the sequel to Guy Ritchie’s (RockNRolla) surprisingly fun, and successful, movie adaptation of Sherlock Holmes; which was released last Christmas, and met with widespread acclaim; meaning that fans have been attempting to guess what will happen in the next film for quite sometime, and now have a fairly in-explanatory image  of the sequel (which can be seen below), to muse over.

It’s not exactly a surprise that the core of Sherlock 2’s plot, and the inevitable twist, have been kept tightly sealed away from prying eyes; as giving away key details would kind of negate the point of making a mystery film; yet we do know that Sherlock Holmes (the world’s greatest detective), and his sidekick Watson, will be squaring up against Sherlock’s arch nemesis Moriarty.

Jared Harris (Mad Men) will be playing Moriarty; the man who’s known as the “Napoleon of crime”; and facing off against Robert Downey Jr. (Due Date), and Jude Law (Enemy at the Gates), who are returning to the franchise, to play Sherlock Holmes, and Dr. Watson, respectively.

Stephen Fry (Bones), and Noomi Rapace (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo), will be joining the cast; with the former playing Holmes’ more intelligent, yet infinitely lazier, brother Mycroft, and the latter (who can be seen alongside Downey and Law in the image below) rumoured to be portraying a French gypsy of unknown significance.

However the costume sported by Rapace in the film’s first still, looks much more like that worn by an officer in the American Civil War; meaning that her character could have more of a military background, is a very smartly dressed gypsy, or simply ‘borrowed’ the outfit for some unknown reason; and other than that, there’s little information that can be gained from the image; which simply features the three running from some sort of explosion.

Sherlock Holmes 2 is due to be released next year (and will most likely come with some form of clever and appropriate subtitle attached), and will open on both sides of the Atlantic on December 16th, 2011.
