Coming from writer/director Gary Ross (The Hunger Games), Free State of Jones tells the true story of a Confederate solider who abandoned his post during the American Civil War (growing tired of all the death he saw) and, together with a band of similarly inclined men, created the Free State of Jones; as seen in the official trailer below.
Matthew McConaughey (Interstellar) stars as Newton Knight; the Confederate who became the leader of the rebels and Free State of Jones, and one of the first men to engage in a publicised mixed race union in the South when he married a slave (played here by Jupiter Ascending‘s Gugu Mbatha-Raw); and will headline the fight against his former Confederate masters when Free State of Jones opens Stateside on May 13th, before making its official UK release date on May 27th.
