Golden Globes 2012 Winners

0

Last night saw the 69th annual Golden Globe ceremony taking place in the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Beverly Hills; a grand occasion that doesn’t quite carry the weight and, according to returning host Ricky Gervais, “the esteem” of the Oscars, but is a time for actors, directors, and everyone involved with making both feature films and television to praise each others exceptional work.

This year’s ceremony was once again presented by British comedian Ricky Gervais (who was presenting the Globes for the third time, but proved to be much more reserved than he was during his extremely controversial second time as the Globes’ host, and rolled back the celebrity jibes in favour of throwing more jokes at The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Globes themselves, and the US TV network which hosted the ceremony; NBC), and presented The Descendants as this year’s clear motion picture winner.

The Descendants came away with awards for Best Drama (ahead of The Help, Moneyball, and War Horse), and saw star George Clooney nabbing a Golden Globe for Best Actor, yet this year’s ceremony didn’t create a singular stand-out movie winner, and saw almost every award going to an overly predictable recipient (even Bryan Cranston’s Best Actor in a TV Drama loss to Kelsey Grammer wasn’t too much of a shock); with Tintin being crowned Best Animated Film, and Meryl Streep picking up the award for Best Actress in a Drama for The Iron Lady.

In the world of TV it was a good night for British shows and actors, as Downton Abbey predictably come away with the award for Best TV Miniseries (proving once again how the Americans go ga-ga over anything involving the British aristocracy), Idris Elba rightfully won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a TV Miniseries (for Luther), and Kate Winslet added another award to her bulging collection when she picked up the Globe for Best Actress in a TV Miniseries (for Mildred Pierce)..
