Iron Man Writers to Reboot Tomb Raider

Most video-game fans will already know that Tomb Raider heroine Lara Croft is already undergoing a substantial makeover for a new game release designed to reboot the franchise, and her movie counterpart is no different; in that she will soon be undergoing a reboot herself, courtesy of Iron Man/Cowboys & Aliens writers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby.

GK Films have hired Fergus and Ostby to script a new adventure for the famous archeologist/action heroine; formerly played by Angelina Jolie; that will be produced by Graham King (The Departed) and Tim Headington (Edge of Darkness), and aim to take the franchise to heights it never previously achieved (as while both previous Tomb Raider movies were a commercial success, they failed to gain the approval of many critics).

One of the largest problems then facing GK, and whoever they choose to fill the director’s chair, will be casting the lead actress; as while Tron: Legacy star Olivia Wilde has reportedly been connected to an upcoming Tomb Raider reboot, there’s no question in the minds of just about every viewer, and video-game fan, that Angelina Jolie was, and always will be, the perfect choice for the role of Miss Croft, but as she’s previously stated she doesn’t intend to return to the series, she will be leaving some big shoes (or cups) to fill.

Nevertheless, King and Headington are “very excited to be rebooting and continuing the Tomb Raider phenomenon”, and will likely want Fergus and Ostby to complete work on their script; which could possibly involve an origin story for the character (as it follows the adventures of a “young and dynamic Lara Croft”); within the next couple of months, so that the hunt for a director, and a star, can begin, ahead of their potential 2013 release date.
