Jason Statham Headlining Transformers 4?

The third installment in the Transformers franchise; Transformers: Dark of the Moon; is currently doing huge business all over the world, and has already broken a number of records in the relatively short time since it’s been released, but conversation has now naturally moved towards a new sequel, with the possibility of Jason Statham (The Expendables) taking on the lead role.

So far in the trilogy it’s been Shia LaBeouf (Wall Street 2) who’s headed up the cast in all three movies as Sam Witwicky, but as he’s reportedly not returning for any more Transformers movies, the door for a new leading man has been left open, and may now be filled by action star Jason Statham; who could reportedly “take Transformers 4 in a new, darker direction”, and could be “just the man” for the film, with his off-screen “relationship with Rosie [Huntington Whiteley, Transformers 3] being an added bonus in marketing the movie”; according to MovieWeb’s ‘insiders’.

But that’s not where the story ends, as not only could Transformers 4 be led by The Transporter himself, but as Transformers director Michael Bay has stated that Dark of the Moon was to be the last of his Transformers films, star Tyrese Gibson has suggested that executive producer Steven Spielberg (Jurassic Park) may sign on to direct the next installment.

So far nothing has been confirmed, and as both of these rumours are pretty out there it’s unlikely either will materialize; as while it’s easy enough to picture The Stath taking on an army of Decepticons armed with with nothing but a bare chest and a moody stare, it’s difficult to see the franchise moving into a dark enough place to entice him, and also difficult to see Spielberg making a kids movie that dark; however do expect more news as and when it breaks.
