With it now seeming cemented in stone that Universal’s planned update of their horror cinematic universe is actually happening, Deadline has announced that Johnny Depp has signed on to play the titular character in The Invisible Man.

Depp will be following in the footsteps of Claude Rains, who played the character in the 1933 classic. It was based on the novella of the same name by H.G. Wells, and follows scientist Griffin, “who has devoted himself to research into optics and invents a way to change a body’s refractive index to that of air so that it absorbs and reflects no light and thus becomes invisible.” James Whale was behind the movie, the man who also directed iconic horrors Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein.

We don’t know who’s going to be directing or writing the remake, but we do know Alex Kurtzman (Transformers) and Chris Morgan (Furious 7) will be producing. Universal’s The Mummy, directed by Kurtzman, will see a June 9, 2017 release.
