Joseph Kosinski Hints at Tron 3

While it’s still far from a foregone conclusion, Joseph Kosinski is one again being quizzed about the possibility of producing a third Tron movie; as he’s back on the promotional trail for Tron: Legacy (which happened to mark his directorial debut), which is being released on in numerous editions on Blu-ray and DVD on April 18th in the UK (and is already available to own in the US).

Speaking to Coming Soon, Kosinski confirmed that making a third Tron film is a very real possibility; as he stated they “laid enough groundwork in Legacy that there’s a lot of jumping off points”, and believes “Legacy ended on a very open-ended, very interesting note” by proving things from The Grid could enter the real world, and opening up huge “possibilities of what that means for the next chapter.”

Tron 3 wouldn’t be an easy film to produce however, and Kosinski was keen to point out that it would be almost as difficult as it was to produce Tron: Legacy; as it would required him to continually push the boundaries, and raise the bar, of what is possible in visual FX; stating that “if we do another one, I think we owe it to the Tron legacy to figure out what’s the next frontier.”

So it seems as though Tron 3 is still far from greenlit (judging by the big ‘If’ we do another one), although the franchise is still due to continue with Disney’s upcoming animated series Tron: Uprising next year (the trailer for which can be seen here); a series which Kosinski is “not directly involved with”, but feels will bring “a younger generation into this world, which interestingly [Tron: Legacy] did not.”

Tron: Legacy is being released (via a number of special editions, double packs etc.) on 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD on April 18th.
