In 1987, Mel Brooks capitalised on the success of Star Wars and other hugely successful sci-fi series with Spaceballs, a comedy that also parodied the Star TrekAlien and Planet of the Apes film series. Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been shattering box office records, so the time seems right for rumours to circulate about a possible sequel.

Speaking with Adam Carolla on his Take A Knee podcast, Mel Brooks (who directed, co-wrote and starred in the 1987 film) said that he wants to start filming on a sequel in early 2016, and the movie is in early stages of development. He also wants some of the original cast to star in the film, which is tentatively titled Spaceballs: The Search for More Money.

With John Candy’s death in 1994, Joan Rivers passing last year, and Rick Moranis’ “extended break”, it’ll be interesting to see how Brooks utilises the remaining cast of the 1987 classic. He’s a master of parody films, so a movie like this couldn’t come at a better time when all the genre has to offer right now is the Scary Movie series and Marlon Wayans.
