Men In Black 3 Officially Announced

After reporting last month that Will Smith was desperately trying to choose between two rival movies that were vying for his attention, it has now been confirmed by Barry Sonnenfeld (The director of the first two Men In Black movies) that he will be returning for Men In Black III, and has apparently been on board with the project for quite sometime.

The questionable factor was the involvement of Smith’s on-screen partner Tommy Lee Jones, who has recently been focussing less on large blockbusters, and going for more serious, and smaller, dramas such as In The Electric Mist, and In The Valley of Elah, but has now finally relented, and agreed to once again return, as Agent Jay’s (Will Smith’s) older, and wiser, partner; Agent Kay.

Information about the plot is so far extremely scarce, but the script has apparently been written by Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder), and will most likely involve a very angry alien, or group of aliens, that enter the planet illegally, and hatch some sort of diabolical plan (probably involving the murder of another alien, or prolific human) that will cause a fallout that will lead to the destruction of Earth, unless Jay and Kay can stop them.

What is known, is that Men In Black III will be released in 3D; an effect that (as well as simply generating extra money through increased ticket sales) should suit Sonnenfeld’s fast directing style and crazed camerawork; although it’s unsure whether or not it will actually be shot in 3D, or simply converted afterwards to a lesser effect.

Sony aims to have the title released by May 30th 2011 (Memorial Day over in The States, which will be much easier to achieve with Smith and Jones back in business (while Jones was considering turning down a role in this movie Josh Brolin, American Gangster, and even Sacha Baron Cohen, Borat, were being considered as replacements), although there is still little word on a shooting schedule, or the rest of the cast; even Rip Torn isn’t confirmed, and his involvement presumably depends on what sort of state the studio thinks he will be in, after the bank robbing incident.
