Michael Fassbender Joins Assassin’s Creed

While we now know that Ubisoft are pushing ahead with a movie based on one of its hottest franchises at the moment; Assassin’s Creed; and that the game’s studio had been looking to keep a fair amount of control over the film’s production (leading them away from the studio path, and Sony in particular), little else was known about the production until now; as it’s just been confirmed that X-Men: First Class star Michael Fassbender has joined the Assassin’s Creed movie as both a star, and producer.

With a plot that’s still largely unconfirmed, Fassbender is set to star as both Desmond Miles, and his historical, bloodthirsty, ancestors (whose lives he replays though a machine known as the Animus; which transports him back into the past to relive the adventures of his assassin ancestors, in the hope that his revelations will help the brotherhood discover something which they can use in the present – be it the meaning of life, an amazing magical weapon, or a simple treasure map).

So far the games have been set during the Crusades, in Renaissance Italy, and the Middle East, while the upcoming Assassin’s Creed 3 takes place during the American Revolution (the War of Independence), and while it’s unclear where the film will be based (should it even stay put in one or two time periods) it is clear that Ubisoft Motion Pictures’ CEO Jean-Julien Baronnet is very keen to have Fassbender on board; stating that “Michael Fassbender was our first choice, as he’s an extremely smart, talented, versatile and committed actor.”
