Multiple Disaster Movies Ahead

2

Back in the 1990’s Roland Emmerich, the man known as the king of the disaster movie thanks to epics such as The Day After Tomorrow and 2012, brought us two movies where the future of humanity (or at least New York City) was severely threatened; they were the much loved, and then record breaking, Independence Day, and the less favoured Godzilla; now both films are set to make big screen reappearances in the future.

Godzilla will not be helmed by Emmerich this time around, as both Warner Bros. And Legendary Pictures are hoping to erase the memory of the 1998 fare, with their new take on the giant beast that will be “what the fans would want to see” and remain true to “those essential elements that have allowed Godzilla to remain culturally relevant for as long as it has.”

There’s no official word on a director, or any specific script details, as of yet, but it’s fairly likely that Godzilla will be appearing in 3D (Yoshimitsu Banno, the director of Godzilla Vs Hedorah, recently secured funding for a 40 minute version in IMAX 3D to be released next year), and is currently scheduled to arrive in 2012.

Independence Day however will not be remade, but currently has rumours of two upcoming sequels, that supposedly have Will Smith attached to both. However there have already been several rumours of an Independence Day sequel since its release 14 years ago, with Roland Emmerich himself having started a few, and despite reports that Fox are seriously considering it, Emmerich and Dean Devlin (Roland’s co-writer/co-producer on the original) haven’t confirmed whether or not they wish to go ahead with any of their story ideas.

Not only that but Will Smith, as well as being a huge financial investment, is still in the middle of trying to choose his next movie, and Emmerich is currently working on his Shakesphere thriller ‘Anonymous’, meaning that it will be at least sometime next year before everyone involved could possibly be available.
