Paramount Buy Bastards

Despite the fact that spec scripts don’t generate anywhere near the sort of attention, or cash, they once did, Paramount have snapped up an original screenplay by up-and-coming writer Justin Malen; titled Bastards; for a six-figure sum merely a day after it was first shopped around.

Bastards will follow the adventures of two fraternal twin brother who discover that while they had always believed their father was dead, it turns out their mother had been lying to them all along; in order to hide the fact that she used to put it about a bit in the ‘70s; and he is in fact alive and well, somewhere; leading them to go on a road trip, and find out which of the many potential father’s could be their real dad.

Obviously there’s no release date set , or even a director attached at this point, as Paramount have only just purchased the script, though it does bode well for the future of cinema, as while Bastards is described as being in the vein of The Hangover (continuing the current up-trend of R-rated comedies), it’s nice to see a studio investing in some original material, rather than focussing solely on sequels, prequels, adaptations, and remakes.
