Piranha 3D Sequel in Development

Opening in the U.S. this weekend, Piranha 3D debuted at sixth place in the Box Office, taking in just over $10 million worth of ticket sales; which would generally be viewed as a disappointing result for most Hollywood movies, but was viewed by the studio as a success (as it has already recouped nearly half of its $24 million budget); which is why Dimension Films has recently announced development of a Piranha sequel.

So far the reviews for Piranha have all been fairly favourable; with even most negative reviews painting it as being ridiculous yet extremely fun; and producer Mark Canton says that “audiences are not just loving Piranha 3D, but cheering for it”, which is why everyone involved “can’t wait to get to work on the sequel.”

It hasn’t been confirmed whether or not director Alexandre Aja will be returning for Piranha 2, or if any writers have yet been hired to develop a script, but with the low-budget nature, and short shooting times, of these films, meaning that the next movie could be expected either next year (2011), or definitely by 2012.
