SOA’s Charlie Hunnam to Lead Del Toro’s Pacific Rim

Best known from playing ‘Jax’ Jackson Teller on Kurt Sutter’s fantastic biker drama Sons of Anarchy, former Byker Grove star Charlie Hunnam has just signed on to appear in Guillermo del Toro’s next blockbuster; Pacific Rim.

After having his most recent project; At The Mountains of Madness (which had Tom Cruise interested); scuppered by Universal over budget constraints, Del Toro is now focussing all his efforts on Pacific Rim; a movie written by Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans, 2010), which sees a future Earth ravaged by giant creatures that threaten to destroy the planet city by city.

Under threat from the giant monsters, Pacific Rim will see humanity banding together to build some highly advanced weapons to fight back, and while it’s still unclear exactly what part Charlie would play in the war, he’s reportedly up for the key role of a pilot operating one of the vehicles sent to fight the monsters, and will presumably laying the smack-down on the offending creatures.

Unlike Mountains, Pacific Rim looks to be going ahead without a hitch so far (possibly thanks to it being located over at Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures), and although we don’t have a shooting schedule or release date to pass on as yet, it will no doubt be good news for Sons of Anarchy fans that Charlie Hunnam is gaining bigger roles (this one possibly having being helped along by Guillermo’s Hellboy, and Charlie’s SOA co-star, Ron Perlman), and can soon be seen in adultery drama The Ledge, Blackbird, and viral comedy Frankie Goes Boom.
