Sony Will Produce Dragon Tattoo Sequels

Coming a mere two years after the release of the beloved Swedish version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Sony’s undeniably well-made remake failed to make audiences rush to the cinema (be it due to the dark tone of the film released in a usually happy period, the speed at which it followed the original, or any number of other factors), yet despite clearly underperforming on original expectations, Sony have now confirmed that they will press ahead with the sequel movies; The Girl Who Played With Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest.

Steve Zaillian (who wrote the script for the first movie) has already written the script for The Girl Who Played With Fire, and is currently penning The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest, and although director David Fincher hasn’t officially signed on to direct the sequels as yet, Sony are apparently hoping to close a deal soon, and begin filming the second movie either towards the end of the year, or at the beginning of 2013.

An executive from Sony said that their English-language remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo; which sees Rooney Mara (The Social Network) and Daniel Craig (Casino Royale) replacing Swedish stars Noomi Rapace (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows) and Michael Nyqvist (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol); is expected to make $200-300 million globally, “and that’s a really good number”; a number which means the studio isn’t too worried about jumping into a further two Girl pictures.
