Thanks to his breakout role as Finn in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, John Boyega has been receiving a number of high-profile offers, one of which he’s now accepted; taking on a role in an as yet untitled drama due to be directed by Kathryn Bigelow.

Bigelow (known for The Hurt Locker, and Zero Dark Thirty) hasn’t let much of the plot out just yet, but will be reuniting with writer Mark Boal to craft a film set against the backdrop of the 12th Street Riot; a five-day binge of violence and destruction which occurred in 1967 as the result of pent-up aggression towards institutional racism and police raids, and evolved into one of the most deadly and destructive riots in US history.

Kathryn will be looking to expand her cast (aiming to gain a noteworthy ensemble) before filming this summer, and aiming to release next year (to tie-in with the riots’ 50th anniversary), while Boyega has not only been filming Star Wars: Episode VIII, but working on tech-thriller The Circle, and recently being cast as the lead in Pacific Rim 2.
