Starring Christian Bale (The Dark Knight) as a missionary who gets caught up in the horror of Nanking when the Japanese Imperial Army invaded the Chinese capital back in 1937, The Flowers of War is being submitted as China’s Oscar entry for the year, and has just had its first trailer released online (now available to view below).

The Flowers of War has been adapted from Yan Geling’s novel 13 Flowers of Nanjing, will see Bale starring as a missionary who takes on the guise of a priest; in order to help a band of schoolgirls and prostitutes (as the Japanese Army were routinely murdering them, or kidnapping them for use as escorts); and though it’s yet to secure overseas distribution, judging from the trailer (and how marketable Bale has become) it shouldn’t be too long before it’ll be released over here.
