Hobbit Battle of Five Armies poster 2With mere months to go until the release of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, the follow-up to The Desolation of Smaug, the closing part of The Hobbit trilogy, and the sixth and final big screen journey to Middle Earth, Comic-Con has reinvigorated fans interest by not only bringing us new Hobbit posters, but the first official trailer for The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (now available to view below).

In case you didn’t already know, The Hobbit is a J.R.R. Tolkein tale set in the fantasy land of Middle Earth, and follows a halfling named Bilbo (played by Sherlock’s Martin Freeman) who accompanies a wizard named Gandalf (Ian McKellen, Last Action Hero), and a company of Dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage, Captain America: The First Avenger) on a quest to rid a dragon from the Dwarves former homeland, The Lonely Mountain.

Having reached the dragon’s lair in The Desolation, The Battle of the Five Armies will see Smaug (the dragon, voiced by Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch) attacking a nearby town, bring old rivalries to the boil and, as the title, and trailer, suggests, contain some hints of battling.

With an excellent musical choice (using Billy Boyd’s, aka Pippin’s, song from Return of the King), the new teaser trailer suggests The Battle of Five Armies, which has once again been directed by Peter Jackson, from a script written by Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Guillermo del Toro, with not only be action packed, but likely pack some heavy emotional punches as well.

With a cast which includes the likes of Luke Evans, Lee Pace, Evangeline Lilly, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Hugo Weaving, Christopher Lee, Billy Connolly, Ian Holm, Sylvester McCoy, James Nesbitt, Graham McTavish, Aidan Turner, Dean O’Gorman, Ken Scott, and Peter Hambleton, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is due to be released on December 12th in the UK, before making its official US release date on December 17th.

The next full length trailer isn’t due to be released until October, so you’ll probably end up watching this quite a few times before The Battle of the Five Armies is eventually released in standard 2D, 3D, IMAX 3D, and HFR (high frame rate) 3D, following the release of The Desolation of Smaug extended edition on November 3rd (in the UK).
