Following on from the first two, surprisingly successful, low budget films, The Purge: Election year will be released during an actual US election year where certain candidates’ plans could spell a dark an uncertain future for the country; making the newly released trailer for the third Purge (below) film all the more scary.

Written and directed by James DeMonaco, and once again starring Frank Grillo,  The Purge: Election Year once again sees a future where all laws are suspended for 12 hours; the idea being, a night of reckless abandon will cleanse the soul and dispel crimes throughout the year; and also has an added political element, where a senator (played by Lost‘s Elizabeth Mitchell) calling for the abolition of the purge is unsurprisingly targeted by pro-purge activists during the annual holiday.

The Purge: Election Year is due to be released in the US on July 1st (just before the Independence Day celebrations begin on July 4th), and will make its official UK release date on July 15th.
