Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows Trailer and Poster

While Alice in Wonderland may have proved a huge draw at the international Box Office, many criticized director Tim Burton for becoming too commercial, and stepping away from the unique style on which he made his name, and now, addressing that, he’s not only returning to his roots by rebooting his original Disney project Frankenweenie, but releasing a the upcoming adaptation of classic TV show Dark Shadows; the first trailer for which can now be seen below.

Once again starring Johnny Depp (who’s worked on the majority of Tim Burton movies; from the heyday of Edward Scissorhands to the less endearing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory remake), Tim Burton’s latest is adapted from the classic ‘60s TV show of the same name, and will see Depp taking on the role of Barnabas Collins; a wealthy playboy happily living out his life in 1752, until he breaks the heart of a beautiful witch (Eva Green, Casino Royale), is cursed, turned into a vampire, buried alive, and unwittingly unearthed in 1972, when he decides to track down his descendants and see what has become of his legacy.

Looking to successfully blend a gothic style and tone with Burton’s unique and brilliant take on modern(ish) suburbia (ala Scissorhands), Dark Shadows sees Barnabas looking to repair the remnants of his former family; which now take the form of Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer, Batman Returns), Roger Collins (Johnny Lee Miller, Trainspotting), and children Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz, Let Me In) and David Collins (Gulliver McGrath, Hugo); and return the family business to its former glory, all while comically attempting to get to grips with all the technological advances he’s missed out on over the years.

Co-starring Helena Bonham Carter (Sweeney Todd), Jackie Earle Haley (Shutter Island), Christopher Lee (The Lord of the Rings) and Alice Cooper, Dark Shadows looks to be nothing if not fun, and is due to be released on May 11th in both the US and UK.
