Titanic 3D Preview at Empire – Big Screen

As part of 20th Century Fox’s presentations at Empire Presents Big Screen, the studio showcased a range of clips from what, until the release of Avatar, their most successful film ever; Titanic; in order to promote its upcoming 3D re-release next year.

As it’s being presided over by 3D pioneer, master filmmaker, and the actual Titanic director; James Cameron; the 3D conversion process (which Cameron himself has spoken out against in regard to other movies) is masterfully meticulous, and looks simply breathtaking.

During the selection of clips on display (which included several of the ship sinking, Jack and Rose dancing, the engine room, and the iconic ‘King of the World’ scene) there were one or two background objects that looked just a little flat, though to most viewers the presentation will appear perfect, and in fact, it is as close to perfect as it can possibly be (dwarfing many modern, rushed, post-production conversions).

However a large part of the reason Titanic looks so good now is because of the restoration (rather than the conversion) process it has gone through, and it’s that, rather than the impressive, yet slightly distracting, sense of scope the movie now has, that makes you sit back and go ‘wow.’

Titanic has already done huge business at the Worldwide Box Office, and Fox can’t be hoping for a repeat of the grosses they received first time around (especially as it seems, to anyone who wasn’t a massive fan of the film already, a rather pointless exercise), but nevertheless Titanic 3D is on its way to cinemas, again and is due to be released next April (around the 100th anniversary of the infamous sinking).
