Tomb Raider official trailer 2

Looking like it could actually be the exception to the rule, and give us a great video game movie, Warner Bros. have just released a brand new trailer for their upcoming Tomb Raider reboot.

Alicia Vikander (Ex_Machina) is stepping into the iconic role of Lara Croft, taking over from previous star Angelina Jolie, and looking to revitalise the franchise in much the same way the 2013 game (on which the film is largely based) ushered in a new wave of enthusiasm for the all-action heroine; bringing in a grittier style, still puzzle-based and focussing on exploration but, with a real emphasis on survival.

Clearly playing on the survival aspect, the new trailer is soundtrack by a dark cover of Destiny’s Child’s Survivor, and shows us Lara visiting her late father’s company, before discovering a puzzle he’d left for her, and promptly heading off into the jungle to carry on his mission of stopping a secret society from ending life on Earth as we know it.

The Affair‘s Dominic West stars as Lara’s father, with Walton Goggins (The Hateful Eight) picking up the part of head-bad-guy, in the film which has been directed by Roar Uthaug (The Wave), also stars Kristin Scott Thomas (Darkest Hour), Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz), and Hannah John-Kamen (Killjoys), and is due to be released on 16 March.
