A film for lovers of mixed martial arts fights, strong acting, and a good dose of family drama, Warrior is a film which tracks the tale of two estranged brothers who, for different reasons, both enter an MMA Tournament and end up clashing heads, and has just had its first official trailer released online (now available to view below).
Starring as war veteran Tommy Riordan, Tom Hardy (Inception) enlists the help of his father (a recovering alcoholic played by 48 Hrs. star Nick Nolte) to train him for a big MMA tournament being held in Las Vegas; hoping to regain some of the pride he feels he’s lost, and earn a sweet cash prize along the way; directly competing with his estranged brother Brendan (Joel Edgerton, King Arthur), who re-enters the MMA world (after leaving years earlier to become a schoolteacher and support his wife Tess; who’s played by House star Jennifer Morrison) after the recession leaves him in dire need of the money the tournament can provide.
The Gary O’Conner (Pride and Glory) directed movie includes just about every fighting movie/family drama film cliche imaginable (and predictably leads to the two brothers having to duke it out in the tournament’s final bout), and is severely unlikely to reach the emotional heights attained by the recently released boxing biopic The Fighter, but clearly looks like it should be worth a watch, when it’s released in the US on September 9th, and gets it’s UK release on September 23rd.
