We’ve already passed the year in which George Orwell’s dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four was set, but as the tale of a dictator-led society has proved to be so influential, and has already made a great transition to the screen (back in 1984 no-less), Imagine Entertainment think it’s high-time for a remake.
Featuring a society known as Oceania and run by a dictator known as Big Brother; where wars with neighbouring states are consecutive and never-ending, propaganda muddies the waters of truth, and individuality is severely discouraged, Nineteen Eighty-Four follows Ministry of Truth employee Winston Smith (previously played by John Hurt) as he begins to foster thoughts of a rebellion, and embrace a forbidden love, with unforeseen consequences.
At this point there’s currently no studio backing, no director, and not even a script or writer in place to bring the new movie to fruition, but pitch’s are currently being heard from both writers and directors in a hope that this time the remake will be realised (unlike the remake attempted by Tim Robbins back in 2006).
