2012 Oscar Nominations

0

Earlier today the nominations for this year’s Oscars; which will be the 84th Academy Awards ceremony; were officially announced, and seemed to heavily favor a couple of films above all others; with Martin Scorse’s Hugo gaining the most nominations (racking up a total of 11 nods), but The Artist clearly leading in the most coveted categories, and only trailing by a single nomination.

War Horse, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (remake), and Moneyball all scored 6 nominations each, with the Descendants picking up a respectable 5, and while the Best Actress category went pretty much as expected (with Meryl Streep being the odds-on-favourtie to win) Streep is up against some stiff competition; including Rooney Mara, Michelle Williams, and Viola Davis.

It’s a pleasure to see The Artist’s Jean Dujardin up for Best Actor, against Gary Oldman (for Tink, Tailor, Soldier, Spy), George Clooney, and Brad Pitt, but the supporting categories hold some of the true hidden gems; with Nick Nolte being recognised for his stunning work in Warrior, and a rare comedy nod going to Bridesmaids Melissa McCarthy.

But 2012 has also come with its noticeable share of snubs, and shocked many movie fans with the omission of Drive from many of the major categories, Tintin’s blatant omission from the animated category, and not only relegating Spielberg’s War Horse to merely technical awards, but leaving Michael Fassbender (Shame) out of the best Actor race, and totally ignoring Woody Harrelson’s Rampart performance (which many believe was truly worthy of a Best Actor Oscar).

To find out who the winners are, you’ll have to wait until the awards are held on February 26th, at the Kodak Theatre in L.A., but for now, a full breakdown of the nominations can be found below (including all the most popular awards; from Best Picture, and Best Director; and those that get considerably less press; such as Visual Effects, Best Documentary, and Best Original Score); including one category which practically seems to announce it’s winner already (as one of the nominations for Best Animated Picture also pops up with a Best Picture nomination).
