Following the immense success of 22 Jump Street (the hilarious sequel to comedy hit 21 Jump Street) earlier this year, not only earning a glowing review from us but becoming the 8th highest grossing film of the summer (in the US), the studio have answered fans’ wishes, commissioned 23 Jump Street, and just hired a new writer to work on the script.
Still, there shouldn’t be too much work involved, as we already know the boys are off to medical school next (if the amusing, sequel-teasing, credits sequence which set up a host of potential sequel ideas is to be believed), and it’ll largely be a cut-and-paste affair following a similar vein as the first two movies, meaning scriptwriter Rodney Rothman (who worked on 22 Jump Street, and scripted Grudge Match) should at least have an outline already, even if replicating the hilarity of the first two films proves difficult.
There’s no word on whether or not directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller will return, as after 22 Jump Street netted a mighty $320 million worldwide their careers have skyrocketed, and they may wish to leave the franchise on a high-note, though it’s fairly likely both Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill will return as Jenko and Schmidt (as long as there are no contract disputes), when 23 Jump Street does start filming.
