Joining a spate of well-regarded films which are currently being adapted for the small screen; alongside Lethal Weapon, Minority Report, Point Break, Rambo, Rush Hour, and Uncle Buck; The Departed is now set to receive its own upcoming TV series adaptation, coming by way of Amazon.
Released in 2006, and winning Martin Scorsese his first Best Director Oscar, The Departed starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson, and Matt Damon (and a host of big-name supporting stars), and followed an undercover cop who was infiltrating the Boston mafia, at the same time the mafia placed one of their own moles inside the Boston police department.
Rather than a remake or sequel, the TV series instead plans to change location, and introduce new characters (just a the film did, when it was adapted from 2002 Hong Kong movie Infernal Affairs); moving to Chicago, where it will places its moles on either side of a Latino drug-war.
Due to be produced by Amazon, and Brad Pitt’s Plan B, The Departed TV series is set to be written by Jason Richman (the Bangkok Dangerous screenwriter who will also serve as Executive Producer on the show), and will join the likes of Amazon originals such as Bosch and The Man In The High Castle should it eventually get picked up for a full season.
