Written by Chris D/Arienzo (Barry Munday), Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3), and Alan Loeb (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps), Rock of Ages centers on the height of the 1980s music scene; where a rock band’s success could ultimately be measured by the size of their hair; and has just added a new name to the cast-list; none other than 30 Rock star Alec Baldwin.
Accepting a role which had been turned down by Anchorman’s Will Ferrell, and Date NIght’s Steve Carell, Baldwin has signed on to play former rocker turned club owner Dennis Dupree, in the movie which has been adapted from the Broadway musical of the same name, and shares more than a few similarities with the recently released Burlesque.
Rock of Ages follows a small-town girl named Sherrie (being played by Burlesque’s Julianne Hough), who makes the journey to Hollywood in the attempt to become a famous rockstar, but ends up working a lowly paid job at Dupree’s Rock of Ages club; a club which has a perilous future ahead, as developers are threatening to shut it down.
Tom Cruise (Knight and Day) is also propping up the cast-list, in the Adam Shankman (Hairspray) directed movie; as the successful rocker Stacee Jaxx, who has his own designs on the club; along with Mary J Blige (Precious), and possibly Russell Brand (Arthur); who at this point is still only rumoured to be appearing.
Rock of Ages is due to begin filming this coming May, and although there hasn’t been a definitive release date set in either the U.K. or U.S. as of yet, it’s expected to touch down with its impressive, ‘80s-rock heavy, soundtrack sometime in 2012.
