Today it was announced that the sequel to Ridley Scott’s classic 1982 science fiction film Blade Runner will begin filming in July, with distribution from Warner Bros. Pictures.
Denis Villeneuve, the man behind great thrillers like Prisoners, Enemy and Sicario, will be directing the film, with Ryan Gosling starring as a character we know nothing about yet and Harrison Ford reprising his role as Rick Deckard. Taking place several decades after the original, the sequel was based on an idea by Scott and Hampton Fincher (co-writer of the original), who co-wrote the script with Michael Green.
There are also plans by the studios to produce a number of prequels and sequels to the 1982 masterpiece, although I doubt we’ll hear much about that for a while. Principal photography on the Blade Runner sequel will begin in July. Most people would be, justifiably, skeptical about a reimagining of the iconic movie that means so much to many movie fans, but what cinema buff would pass up a chance to see Villeneuve’s take on the neo-noir universe and bring it back to life for modern audiences?
