Often referred to as one of the most homosexual movies of all time (getting muscly men to oil up and play slow-motion volleyball would give that sort of impression), the action movie Top Gun still has a huge following 24 years after it’s release, and may end up receiving a sequel sometime down the line.
There were reports of a sequel emerging around two years ago; although nothing ever fully materialized, as producer Jerry Bruckheimer (Bad Boys) explained that he and partner Don Simpson (who worked with him on the original Top Gun, The Rock, Beverly Hills Cop, and other classics) “tried to develop a sequel, and couldn’t do it”, and after that it was taken over by Tom Cruise (who was the star of the original) who “tried to develop something, and it never quite happened”; but now the rumors of a return have started again.
The first movie revolved around the hot-shot pilot Maverick (Cruise); who was desperate to prove he was the best-of-the-best, at the illustrious Top Gun flight school, and upstage his fellow students at every turn; and it appears that the sequel (should it ever get made) would also feature him in a big way, as Tom Cruise himself once attempted to develop it, and Jerry Bruckheimer recently stated that he has been “recently approached again to start talking about it [the sequel]”, although nothing is anywhere near sorted yet, and the project is still in the embryonic stages of development; as it’s a tough nut to crack being as “the aviation community has completely changed since the first movie” and the team will have to “find a way in, and work out how to incorporate the Maverick character into it.”
So while there’s nothing confirmed, no dates can possibly be given, and the script hasn’t even been written yet, it does at least provide fans of the original with a glimmer of hope; that at some point in the future, the Maverick will fly again; unless it eventually goes the way of Ghostbusters 3, and all but fizzles out into nothing.
