Marvel recently released the first official poster for Captain America: The First Avenger (which can now be seen below); the movie, based on the Marvel Comics’ superhero of the same name, which is due to have its theatrical debut later this year.
Set during World War II, The First Avenger follows the adventures of Steve Rogers (who’s to be played by Scott Pilgrim‘s Chris Evans) as he’s refused entry into the military (on medical grounds), but signs up for a secret ‘Super Soldier’ program that soon turns him into the epitome of human perfection.
After being injected with the U.S. military’s patented ‘Super Soldier Serum’ Steve then heads off to fight the Nazi’s and promptly save the world; a task that will be made more difficult thanks to the Nazi’s own hi-tech programs, and a ruthless commander named Johann Schmidt (to be played by The Matrix’s Hugo Weaving), a.k.a. The Red Skull.
Tommy Lee Jones (Men In Black) will also be appearing in the Joe Johnston (Jumanji) directed movie that despite it’s World War II setting “will not feel like a war movie”, according to its director, and is “funny, emotional, serious, and full of action” when it needs to be.
Due to be the second Marvel superhero movie released this year, Captain America: The First Avenger will follow the release of Thor (which is being released on April 29th in the U.K. and on May 6th in the U.S.), with a July 22nd release in the U.S., and a July 29th release in the U.K.
