Sporting a wildly different tone to that of the first trailer, the latest promo for Chappie; the upcoming sci-fi movie from District 9 director Neill Blomkamp; focusses less on the adorable wonderment behind creating a new form of artificial intelligence, and more on the conflicting ideals behind AI, and the potential problems it could cause.
Taking place in a world where police robots are commonplace, Chappie sees a computer genius (played by Slumdog Millionaire star Dev Patel) creating a new form of life, and giving a robot true artificial intelligence. Chappie (the genius’ robot) then begins to learn and develop, and soon incurs the wrath of a man who’s fearful of robots, and the police droids, in general.
With Hugh Jackman (X-Men: Days of Future Past) playing the bad guy, Sigourney Weaver (Alien) co-starring), and District 9’s Sharlto Copley both voicing and providing the motion capture performance behind the robot, the Neill Blomkamp written and directed Chappie is due to be released on March 6th in both the US and UK.
