While Casino Royale’s Mads Mikkelson looked set to join the second solo outing of Marvel superhero Thor, as the second villain in the movie (obviously after Tom Hiddleston’s Loki), he’s now stepped aside to appear in the upcoming Hannibal Lecter TV series, and left the door open for former Doctor Who. Christopher Eccleston to take his place.
Due to play Malekith The Accursed, Eccleston will play the leader of the dark elves of Svartalfheim who, in the comics, not only had strong energy powers, but the ability to both shape-shift and teleport; making him a rather dangerous adversary for Thor (who’ll once again be played by returning star Chris Hemsworth).
While both Thor and Loki were last seen in The Avengers, their latest solo outing will once again see them joined with returning stars Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Idris Elba, and Ray Stevenson, when Thor: The Dark World is released on November 8th 2013 in both the US and UK.
