Best known for his action movies, such as Con Air, Expendables 2, and The Mechanic; Simon West will soon be directing the latest remake of classic horror movie The Blob.
With an impressive pedigree behind it; having introduced Steve McQueen to the movie-going public with the first film, and delivered a knock-out remake (scripted by Frank Darabont, and starring Kevin Dillon) in the ‘80s; there’s a lot of live up to, and a lot of potential downfalls, with tackling The Blob; as even director Rob Zombie (who was previously attached to direct) believes “hat gigantic Jello-looking thing might have been scary to audiences in the 1950s, but people would laugh now.”
Still, producers Richard Saperstein and Brian Witten (who worked on adapting Stephen King’s Cell) believe “Simon West has a terrific and terrifying vision for bringing this iconic outer-space creature to life for a new generation”, and West himself has said that by using “modern CGI we can now fully realise the potential of The Blob. The world I create will be totally believable, immersive and emotionally satisfying. It’s a thrill to introduce an enduring icon to a wider audience and a whole new era of fans.”
With no set release date, or confirmed stars as yet (though we’d imagine The Blob would attract fairly low-key, and upcoming talent), it’s not clear exactly when we’ll see the remake of The Blob, though shooting is planned to begin this summer; suggesting a possible release next year.
