Whilst blending the sci-fi and western genres isn’t something many people would attempt, or even believe could work, it’s exactly what director Jon Favreau (Iron Man) has done with Cowboys & Aliens; the hotly anticipated movie that’s based on the graphic novel of the same name, and has just had it’s first official teaser trailer released (which is available to view below).
Daniel Craig (Casino Royale) stars in the film as an amnesiac cowboy, who wanders into the town of Absolution with a strange gadget on his wrist, and gets promptly booted out of the small town; which rejects all strangers, and lives in fear of it’s ruthless Colonel Dolarhyde (Harrison Ford, Extraordinary Measures); before aliens descend upon it, causing all sorts of mayhem and destruction, and forcing him to unite the town and its enemies to battle the common foe, and unlock the powers of his mysterious shackle.
Olivia Wilde (Tron: Legacy), Sam Rockwell (Moon), Clany Brown (The Shawshank Redemption), and Walton Goggins (The Shield), are also appearing in the picture which unlike most summer blockbusters, is being presented in standard 2D, and has been filmed on 35mm film; in an effort to capture the tone of the classic westerns it aims to emulate.
Opening into a summer that’s already plastered with several predicted blockbusters; including Captain America, Thor, The Hangover 2, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Transformers 3, X-Men: First Class, Kung Fu Panda 2, and more; Cowboys & Aliens is due to be release on July 29th next year in the United States, and on August 12th in the U.K., but for anyone who wants an early look, the official teaser trailer can be viewed below.
