Given not only how brilliant the film is (read our spoiler-free review for proof), but the sheer tenacity of it’s relentlessly funny marketing campaign, it should come as no surprise to learn Deadpool topped the Box Office in a number of territories this weekend. What has come as a surprise to a number of studio executives and analysts, is just how much money Deadpool has made (by our reckoning, roughly… all of it); as it’s smashed a number of Stateside Box Office records.
- Best R-rated opening in February – Deadpool (previously Fifty Shades Of Grey).
- Best R-rated opening year-round – Deadpool (previously The Matrix Reloaded).
- Best R-rated comic-book adaptation opening – Deadpool (previously 300).
- Best President’s Day opening weekend – Deadpool.
- Best opening weekend ever – Star Wars: The Force Awakens, obviously. But Deadpool still done good!
And raking in just shy of $135 million in North America, in a mere three days, is all the more impressive and studio-pleasing when you remember Deadpool had to keep it’s budget below $60m (final tally clocks in at around $58m).
It also looks to have made over a quarter of a billion in its first weekend globally – estimates currently estimate north of $275m. An awe-worthy haul for a film many classed as a gamble.
Read our full Deadpool review here, then go see Ryan Reynolds’ hugely enjoyable, funny, action-packed, sweary, flat-out brilliant film (again), and get ready for all the talk of sequels and X-Men crossovers you can handle.
Oh, and… cue the music…
