Del Toro Talks Pacific Rim 2

Del ToroIt was only the other day that director Guillermo del Toro announced he was working on a sequel to last year’s unexpectedly brilliant Pacific Rim, expanding the Pacific Rim universe into other mediums (TV and comics), and gave us an official release date for Pacific Rim 2, yet he’s already ready been tracked down by the Wall Street Journal, and offered up a few more hints as to what we can expect from the giant-most follow-up.

While he hopes many of the original characters will return, Guillermo stresses that the story he’s been crafting with writers Zak Penn (The Avengers) and Travis Beacham (who worked on the first movie) will be different from the first Pacific Rim; after he “said to Zak, lets keep kicking ideas till we find one that really, really turns the first movie on its ear” and stated how it was difficult to create a new universe from scratch (rather than borrowing from comic mythology) last time; meaning they “had to sacrifice many aspects to be able to cram everything in the first movie.”

The plan is to have two movies that “stand on their own” and are “very different from each other, although hopefully bringing the same joyful spectacle” as one another, whilst “bringing a few characters that are new, and hopefully doing good work managing those that survived the first movie!”

Guillermo’s next film (the upcoming horror movie Crimson Peak) is due to be released on October 16th in both the US and UK, and while he’s still hoping to progress with his planned big screen horror adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s At The Mountains of Madness that project currently remains in limbo, although the potentially awesome sci-fi/action sequel Pacific Rim 2 does has an official release date; scheduled in for April 7th 2017.
