It may not have lit up but the Box Office like Batman, but 1990 comic-book movie Dick Tracy turned a profit, won three Oscars, and featured a cast littered with big-names (including Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, James Caan, and Madonna), and now over a quarter of a century after its release, we could be getting a sequel.
Yes, speaking at CinemaCon yesterday Warren Beatty (who starred as the titular prohibition-era detective Tracy, and directed, and has not only talked up the possibility of a sequel ever since but even taken legal action to ensure he maintained the rights to future Tracy films) told producer Arnold Milchan he is “serious about it.”
Beatty also pointed out he’s “slow about these things”, but Milchan also confirmed discussions have taken place, and Dick Tracy 2 (whatever it ends up being called) could shoot within the next couple of years; bringing the infamous, yellow trench coat-wearing detective, and his radio/wristwatch back to the big screen in a big way.
However, it’s still little more than a pipe-dream at this point, as Beatty is still hard at work producing an untitled Howard Hughes movie, and considering a number of other projects afterwards – hopefully one of which could be a Dick Tracy sequel!
