With apparent productions issues, editing room problems (which were apparently ‘bollocks‘ in the end), and slight fan-wariness, Dredd was kind of up against the odds when it was released this past weekend, but impressively went on to beat out all the competition, and take the coveted number one spot at the Box Office.
Dredd‘s feat is all the more impressive when you realise it was released in direct competition with the solid gangster movie Lawless, and placed higher than other solid competitors such as Anna Karenina and Total Recall, to not only rake in over £1M in its opening weekend, but become the first 18 certificate film to take the coveted number one spot since 2010.
Starring Karl Urban (Star Trek) as the titular, iconic, British-comic-book legend Judge Dredd, and placing him alongside Olivia Thirlby (Juno), Dredd follows the titular peacekeeping Judge as he and his rookie partner Cassandra attempt to storm a Mega City high-rise in order to topple drug baron Ma-Ma (Lena Headey, Game of Thrones), in the Pete Travis (Vantage Point) directed movie which is out now in the UK, and will make its US release date on September 21st.
